Decide what the operation needs to know
Begin with the operating decisions that monitoring will support. Identify the required measurement locations, the equipment status that matters and which events need attention from the operator.
A room-air measurement and a product-temperature measurement answer different questions. The project specification should state the purpose and location of each point.
Confirm the available equipment interfaces
Review the selected controllers, sensors and communication options with the equipment suppliers. Identify which information is available locally and which data can be shared through the agreed project interface.
Remote access, data logging and third-party integration need to be included explicitly in the scope. They should not be assumed from a general reference to intelligent controls.
Assign the response
An alarm needs a responsible recipient and an agreed response process. The project team should define who receives alerts, who assesses the event and who can arrange local intervention.
Record the communication dependencies and how the site will operate if a connection or service is unavailable.
Check the system at handover
The agreed checks should confirm the installed points, alarm routing, records and operator access. Keep the approved point list and operating guidance with the handover documents.
